What Is Stainless Steel 316L? Composition & Corrosion Resistance

316L (EN 1.4404, UNS S31603) is the low-carbon, molybdenum-bearing Stainless Steel variant of grade 316, engineered for applications demanding superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich and acidic environments. The addition of 2.0–3.0% molybdenum, combined with carbon restricted to 0.030% max, gives the grade markedly better performance than 304L in marine, chemical processing, and pharmaceutical environments, while also reducing the risk of intergranular corrosion after welding. Chromium content of 16.0–18.0% and nickel content of 10.0–14.0% round out an austenitic structure with excellent ductility, weldability, and long-term corrosion resistance.

316L stainless steel pipe is specified extensively in process piping, chemical transport lines, and pharmaceutical systems where internal corrosion resistance and weld integrity are critical, typically manufactured to standards such as ASTM A312 and A213. Flat-rolled forms serve a different set of industries. 316L stainless steel sheet is used in fabrication, architectural cladding, and equipment manufacturing where consistent surface finish and formability matter most.

For thinner-gauge and general fabrication use, 316L steel sheets are commonly supplied to ASTM A240 and EN 10088-2, covering the tolerance and finish requirements most sheet-metal work calls for. Bar and precision long-product applications - round, hexagon, square, and flat sections used in machining, shafting, and fabrication - call for the same underlying metallurgical discipline as pipe and sheet: controlled melt chemistry, solution annealing, and consistent surface and dimensional quality through every processing stage.
